This was how my african mask sculpture was done (clockwise from top left):
1. The mask is sculpted in clay (you can see the clay bin in the background.)
2. Plaster is put on the clay sculpture to create the mould.
3. This is what the mould looks like with the clay taken out.
-The next step was applying the plaster into the mould but my hands were covered in plaster so I wasn't able to take a photo -
4. Time to take out the mould by chiselling it out.
5. What the mask looked like when it was separated from the mould.
6. Painted the base colour of the mask.
7. Painted the top coat, which was black with a bit of blue.
8. Scrubbed out bits of the top coat so that the brown base colour can show through.

Bottom picture: The Finished Sculpture :XD:

I had so much fun making this. Thanks so much to the lovely people of the Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School, especially my teacher Michael Christie for making my first term in the school an enjoyable one. Looking forward to next term and my next project!

Geeeee, that looks really-really neat. One day, I'll follow into your footsteps and go for sculpting classes myself. Gonna be in a while though. =)
I myself model in polymeric clay - it's faaar simplier. Like... plasticine, lol :D
btw, I wanted to ask - was it hard to chisel the mould? I surely would have been scared to even apply it!

It wasn't hard, but after a while my arms became tired :D I was worried that I might ruin the sculpture as I chisel out the mould so for a while I was just chiselling it out small pieces at a time but my instructor said I was taking too long to do it :giggle: Anyway you can do some repairs to your piece if it got damaged along the way, so it's all good. And yes if you have the opportunity to take sculpting classes, go for it! It's really lots of fun.

Oh I see :D The ability to make repairs afterwards would be life-saving for me :XD:

My pleasure. I really enjoyed making it. For me actual sculpting is far more enjoyable than digital sculpting, mainly because I can physically touch what I'm working on. So much fun :XD:
